advanced extinguishing systems for:

Aero E-Ferry Ellen

Aero E-Ferry Ellen

This is the first project for FIFI4Marine. A 900L fire extinguishing system was installed here in 2017 which protects 4.3MWh of Lithium Ion batteries. E-Ferry Ellen is a fully electric passenger and car ferry and operates between Søby (island of Ærø) and Fynshav in southern Denmark.

FIFI4MARINE's fire extinguishing solution ensures that any fire from the Lithium Ion battery system installed to run the ship electrically is quickly and adequately extinguished. This protects crew members, passengers, the cars on the ferry, the ship and the batteries that did not catch fire. It can therefore continue sailing under its own power to port where the ship can be further examined. It also ensures that ferry services can resume soon after the calamity.

The E-Ferry Ellen was built by Søby Shipyard. a high-quality shipyard whose core business is serving its customers with their ship repairs and maintenance projects, which are carried out in one of its three dry docks. The shipyard has a large and high-quality engine workshop, where various engines, generators, pumps, compressors, etc. are maintained and overhauled. All other departments at the shipyard are manned by subcontractors, who are always available to the shipyard and always provide the same high-quality workmanship.

Evaluation after ferry is commissioned has resulted:

  • 85% energy efficiency (net-to-propeller)-
  • Consumption of 1600 kWh (per round trip of 22 nautical miles; about 40 km)
  • 4-8 years before higher investment costs are converted into savings through lower operating costs
  • 2,520 tonnes/year of CO2 emissions saved (compared to a modern diesel ferry; with electricity generated at Ærøby from clean renewable sources; 2,010 tonnes if powered by the standard Danish grid mix)
  • CO2 emissions from battery production estimated at 215-430 tonnes (three months' emissions of the best modern diesel ferry)

The shipyard has built many new ships over the years and is still involved in such newbuilding projects. The shipyard has always had a very innovative approach in shipbuilding, of which the all-electric ferry "Ellen" is a good example. It was the first and largest passenger ferry with all-electric propulsion when it was built in 2019.
